I don't know how you do it! You work at least as many hours as I do (probably more), but I have the kids in daycare 3 days a week. And I feel like I'm overloaded as it is.

You certainly do expect a lot from yourself!

Oh, she does know that I work–that I’m a teacher and I help people talk–and that sometimes I have to work on my computer and I can’t play. I just mean I don’t want it to have an impact on her access to an attentive caregiver, which, occasionally, it does. I don’t want it to have a place on her mental landscape where work is more important than she is, like she seems to feel about her father’s work.

I agree, you should totally tell her about your work! She should you know that you have this whole area in your life that you're good at that doesn't have anything to do with her, and that it's important for you to do it. I have been thinking about modeling lately (modeling behavior, not modeling for a camera) because A and I were talking about careers and she said she wanted to be nothing when she grew up. She didn't say "Like you," but she certainly doesn't see me pursuing any interests of my own, and it really made me think about how that isn't healthy for her at all.

Basically, what the previous commenter said. :)

Why don't you want her to know anything about your work? It seems to me that anything that increases your self-esteem and security would be something you want to pass on to her. I understand you not wanting work to take over your life, but I don't really see anything wrong with letting her know that there are such things in life as independence, self-sufficiency, deadlines, and satisfaction in doing a good job.

I know she's a little young, but you can probably set up quiet time, where she has to play with minimal supervision (coloring, reading, toys, play-doh, even some TV) and she is responsible for entertaining herself. Quietly. Without getting in trouble. Don't laugh. It could work. :)

That's totally awesome. I have the same issues with earrings actually. I have to use the fancy earrings as well, otherwise I ooze and itch and get infected everywhere. It's...not pretty.

We're all pretty much allergic to the cheap earrings in my family. Gold or silver posts, or else there will be infections. I have a second hole in one ear that is constantly oozing, even with gold posts, though, so I may have to try something else.

I got my ears pierced when I was about 8 - that's when my mom decided we were old enough to take care of the maintenance ourselves. She didn't get her ears pierced until she was about 40!

I like the matter-of-fact really-short person treatment that some people give my girl. She's more comfortable with it too.

I've done some research and it looks like, yes, nickel is the thing to avoid, but that if you want to wear earrings you already have that might have nickel in them, to paint the posts with clear nail polish. I'm thinking about trying that.

Sounds like quite an adventure! I got my ears pierced when I was six and always loved to wear earrings. I finally figured out that my ears were constantly hurting, weepy, and full of nasty bumps because of my earrings. I really miss wearing them because I think they can really make a look, but it just isn't worth the pain for me. I hope you don't start having more allergic reactions.

I didn't wear earrings for a long time either, but then I discovered I just can't wear cheap earrings anymore. I think it's the nickel maybe?

I got my ears pierced when I was 9, I think. My rule for A is that she can get them pierced when she can take care of them.

A lot of piercers do not allow, or do not want children in their studios for that reason, among others. Many don't mind, however, and of course, a professional piercer does pierce many things that are sexual in nature.

You should try titanium jewelry for your ears--very few people have reactions to it.

I had my ears pierced when I was in first grade, but they always bothered me. I would get big knots on my lobes where the holes were. As a result, I never wore earrings and the holes closed. When I was in 7th grade, I got them pierced again. They still hurt like hell, so once again I never wore earrings. By the time I graduated from high they had closed again. And I am okay with that. Too painful!

Oh dear. Sorry it didn't work out, but it was ambitious to try.

I'd never heard of letter boxing, but there's a box in a park we go to all the time! Now I'm kind of intrigued.
