I just mean I don’t want it to have an impact on her access to an attentive caregiver, which, occasionally, it does. I don’t want it to have a place on her mental landscape where work is more important than she is, like she seems to feel about her father’s work. Oh, she does know that I work–that I’m a teacher and I help people talk–and that sometimes I have to work on my computer and I can’t play. She should you know that you have this whole area in your life that you're good at that doesn't have anything to do with her, and that it's important for you to do it. I have been thinking about modeling lately (modeling behavior, not modeling for a camera) because A and I were talking about careers and she said she wanted to be nothing when she grew up. She didn't say "Like you," but she certainly doesn't see me pursuing any interests of my own, and it really made me think about how that isn't healthy for her at all. It seems to me that anything that increases your self-esteem and security would be something you want to pass on to her. I understand you not wanting work to take over your life, but I don't really see anything wrong with letting her know that there are such things in life as independence, self-sufficiency, deadlines, and satisfaction in doing a good job. I know she's a little young, but you can probably set up quiet time, where she has to play with minimal supervision (coloring, reading, toys, play-doh, even some TV) and she is responsible for entertaining herself. They still hurt like hell, so once again I never wore earrings. By the time I graduated from high they had closed again. And I am okay with that. Too painful!
