Allergies
1 May 2008Baby seems to have food allergies, or at least some serious sensitivities. She’s always tended to eczema, having a persistent patch on the back on one thigh and others which pop up from time to time on her hands, face. Then a few months ago I noticed that after eating tomatoes she would get a red and irritated face which cleared up with some Aquaphor applied overnight. I have a slight skin sensitivity to tomatoes myself which isn’t a big deal, and figured the yumminess of tomatoes was worth having to risk a little skin irritation from time to time, so we kept feeding them to her (she loves tomatoes and tomato sauce). We also noticed that whole milk seemed to be giving her absurdly water poop, so we put her back full-time on formula and that seemed to help. Though I’m not sure if she has a problem with them now, she had effects from citrus when I was breastfeeding.
A couple of weeks ago, while eating eggplant parmigiana, Baby started crying, flipping out a little. Her poor hands were covered in weird white raised welts where the food had touched her. It was scary. We washed her hands, applied Aquaphor (I use that for everything), and wrapped her little hands in gauze and the welts were gone within an hour. She’d had eggplant before, but I thought maybe that was it, since she’d never had that problem with tomato. But the next time she had food with tomato sauce in it she got the welts again. So no more tomato.
Ever since then, though, the eczema on her hands has just been horrible. And then a couple of nights ago Baby got the welts-on-hands problem again from eating some (tomato-free, seafood-free) paella. I can’t imagine what she’s reacting to. From time to time she’ll get red rings around her eyes and on her cheeks. The Aquaphor isn’t helping and neither is the prescription anti-eczema medicine she has, partly because it is very difficult to apply it to her hands. We’ll put some on, wrap the hand in gauze and secure it with tape, but Baby really needs her thumbs to sleep, and the bandage will somehow end up around her wrist by morning, the medicine presumably wiped off. This weird raw redness (maybe it isn’t even eczema) is the worst on her thumbs, I guess because of the thumb-sucking. Her doctor gave us a prescription for her to have Claritin several months ago for seasonal allergies, noting a slight cough and the red around Baby’s eyes, but I never filled it as that’s pretty serious medicine for what seems to me to be run-of-the-mill runny nose pollen-allergy stuff. I think the issue is food, and I’d like to treat that issue by eliminating whatever food it is. How can I figure this out? What can I do?

Obviously I am of no help to you. I can’t seem to figure Izzy’s allergies out either.
The spots on her hands look like eczema to me. Is your anti-eczema medicine a corticosteroid? That works wonders for Porgie and Izzy.

Poor Baby. I’m no real help with this, but I remember on the comments of a recent Ask Moxie post hedra recommended a message board of moms w/kids w/allergies and sensitivities–if you can find that, and post about Baby’s issues, maybe they can help?

Christy,
Yes, Triamcinolone acetonide, but it doesn’t really help.
Electriclady,
Good idea. I’ll look for it!

Poor little girl. J has similar issues. He gets eczema on his stomach and back, and then scratches it until he bleeds, so he is always covered in scratches. We also think it’s food, though with me still nursing that adds to the complication. Both J & S also react around their mouths and on their hands when they eat certain foods, including tomato, though it doesn’t usually last more than a couple of hours. Our ped said it was the reaction of the saliva (hence on the face and hands) and not to worry too much. But I do feel really bad for J for his torso itchiness.
Oh, and we gave them eggplant once, when they were about 10 months, and they both had horrible skin reactions.

Kya gets the red face from tomatoes too… as soon as it touches her face she is red. However I just wipe it clean and it goes away by morning. I use Aquafor on her too she has dry skin. Have you thought of maybe buying the bodywash for psoriasis? Did they test her for it?

She hasn’t been tested for anything yet. I’m trying to decide how to go about that. Blood test/skin test, pediatrician/allergist, etc.

Max has allergies too and we have suffered with them for a while. He is dairy, soy and wheat free. maybe it was the cheese on the eggplant parm and the tomatoes. They are now saying that allergies in babies are caused by leaky gut and candida over growth (yeast). One of the best things I have done for Max is to put him on a probiotic. You can buy one at whole foods or check out florastor or garden of life products. Also, when there is an allergy, something is causing it. One way to deal with them is to take her to a homeopath. I would stay away from tomato, peppers and cheese for a little.I am sorry she has this. Also about testing, sometimes those test are not really accurate. They may not show and allergy by skin but they can still have an intolerance. Max does not show one by skin to milk but when he drinks it-he breaks out in a rash on his testicles, penis and butt and zits all over his face and a really upset stomach.

Ughhhhhh. My opinion: Eczema is not a skin condition, it is a symptom of a food allergy (or allergies.) Allergy testing, especially in young children, is not only pretty invasive, it can also be highly inaccurate. The *only* way to figure anything out is to go on a hardcore elimination diet. (Dr. Sears has it on his website.)
Rylan gets rashy with tomato/citrus as well, and can’t drink cow’s milk. Poor kids.
I second the probiotic, though.

Poor Baby, I’m sorry. Two of my girls have inherited sensitive skin from me. I am going to try the Aquaphor. All my kids get red skin when Ranch dressing touches it. Weird.
